Nicki Versus The World

This year, Nicki Minaj has been stirring up a lot of controversy on social media.

Two platinum selling albums, four AMAs, two teen choice awards, and beef with celebrities? Nicki Minaj has gotten herself into multiple confrontations with other celebrities, creating serious drama in the social media world. Whether it be calling out Miley Cyrus at the 2015 VMAs or sub-tweeting Taylor, she seems to always find her way into squabbles with peers in her industry.

The real drama began when nominations for the Video Music Awards went out. Though Nicki had released a very popular, yet controversial music video for her song “Anaconda” on August 19, 2014, she wasn’t nominated for Video of the Year. She tweeted about how her only nomination — for Best Hip Hop Video — was unfair, and that the VMA’S look for a certain type of music video to nominate.

Though Nicki didn’t mention any names, Taylor Swift, nominee for Video of the Year with “Bad Blood,” among other nominations, responded to the rapper’s tweet, defending herself. She told the rapper that she had “done nothing but love and support [her]. It’s unlikely of [her] to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took [her] slot.” This escalated the drama.

Though Taylor’s intentions about the tweet may have been good, Nicki believed that she missed the point: the music industry is racist as well as sexist. Though in recent years Taylor has been educating herself on many important issues, this was one area she wasn’t well-versed in. In an attempt to make peace, Taylor offered to share her time on stage with Nicki. Meanwhile, Nicki fans began bashing Taylor.

The dust settled several days later, when Taylor tweeted that she missed the point of Nicki’s tweet. The two made up, and later performed together at the VMAs, however; the drama began anew when Miley Cyrus commented on the weeks-old disagreement…

“Miley, what’s good?” The most iconic moment of this year’s Video Music Awards, otherwise known as the VMAs. This year when Nicki Minaj went up to accept her award, she called Miley Cyrus out for talking about her in an interview with the New York Times on the 27th.

During Miley’s interview, she referred to the incident on Twitter between Nicki and Taylor, “if you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself” (New York Times). She then later said, “What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind.” Three days after the article came out, almost ironically, Nicki received her award.

Right after this aired on MTV, much of the online community assumed that the fight was fake. There were theories saying, “Nicki agreed to do one stunt with Taylor why wouldn’t she do another one with Miley now”, “MTV responded to that really fast and started posting things quickly”, or “The fact that it is MTV, it seems like something they would do, and they wouldn’t admit to it being fake”. MTV has confirmed that the dispute between Nicki and Miley was real, but there is still some suspicion on the subject.

Nicki will always be a huge part of the 2015 VMAs but I’m sure it won’t be long until she’s involved in more drama. We surveyed some of our classmates to see their opinions; the majority of them wanted a political battle of Nicki vs. Trump next, and 67% of them think that Nicki was justified in calling out Miley and Taylor regarding the VMAs. Who will Nicki battle next? Who should Nicki battle next?
