Eminem or Jay-Z? Reflection/Results

Jay-Z vs. Eminem is a popular discussion amongst rap fans. A recent survey conducted shows that people at Wakefield High School generally prefer Slim Shady.

Marshall Mathers, known by his stage name Eminem, has released several #1 albums such as The Marshall Mathers LP, The Eminem Show and Recovery. Also, he has dropped countless hits including “Lose Yourself”, “Stan”, “Without Me”, “My Name Is”, “Not Afraid”, and “Love the Way You Lie”. Since the released of his acclaimed debut album The Slim Shady LP, Eminem has become one of the biggest names in the music business. He has gained a massive following with his classic lyrical mix of comedy, emotion, struggle and even violence. He is beloved by old school rap enthusiasts and teenage girls alike. Em is still going strong as the recently released Marshall Mathers LP 2 hit the top of the Billboard charts and spawned the smash hit “The Monster”. The album was also received fairly positively by critics as it scored a 72 aggregate score on music review website Metacritic.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Shawn Carter – you know him as Jay-Z – has also had an immensely successful career in the music business. Over the course of his career, Jay-Z has scored thirteen #1 albums and over twenty Billboard Top 40 hits. His last album Magna Carta Holy Grail, was not exactly beloved by critics as it received an aggregate score of 60 from Metacritic. However, that does not mean the album was a failure. It spawned the hit “Holy Grail” featuring Justin Timberlake and debuted at the top of the Billboard albums chart with first week sales of 528,000 copies. By the end of 2013, MCHG had sold over a million copies and been certified double platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America. On top of the commercial success of the album, Jay-Z also made key featured guests on hit songs such as Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie”, wife Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love” and Drake’s “Pound Cake”.

Despite their ages (Jay-Z is 44 and Eminem is 41), the two hip hop superstars are still on top of the music world. And it looks like their reign will continue as fans are eagerly awaiting a 2nd Jay-Z and Kanye West collaboration album and The Monster Tour that Eminem and Rihanna will embark on together. They’ve both built a ridiculous following and appeal to many different varieties of people. Jay-Z is more appealing to inner city kids and older hip hop fanatics while Eminem is more beloved by younger rap fans and the suburban population.

Well at Wakefield High, Eminem is clearly the preference. A recent survey amongst 25 teachers and students showed that 16 prefer Eminem to Jay-Z while only 9 like Hov more. Therefore, it appears as though the general population of Wakefield High School is more into Em. I previously had predicted that slightly more people would vote for Eminem but I never would have thought that the margin would be so wide. What’s your personal opinion?
